Critical Kill, (pg. 28 in your DM's Guide)
26/5/08

Ok, so if you roll a 20 on a 20 sided die, then whatever you were trying to hit gets hit, and sets you up for a critical hit. Critical hits
usually do twice normal damage to the target. You must roll again and beat your target's Armour Class to do that. If you roll another
natural 20, then you may roll a third time for an instant kill. This can only be done with another natural 20, otherwise, it is just a critical
hit. 20x20x20= 8000 so if you make 8000 attacks, you will get one instant kill eventually. That's Vindalf's plan in a nutshell.

Rolling a 1 means a critical failure, missing the target and incurring some sort of penalty. It stands to reason that a 1/8000 roll of
three ones would mean something really bad happens. Since the odds of rolling a 20 are the same as rolling a 1, the odds of
Vindalf's success are 50/50.
