Every D&D campaign that was ever made must involve the characters starting at/ meeting new characters in or getting the quest assignment from the tavern. Even Conan the Barbarian was in the tavern when the guards came to send him against Thulsa Doom. I guess that barkeepers in fantasy worlds just have a list of quests lined up to tell people about. Doesn't sound like good business to get your customers killed, but I guess the ones who get the treasure make up for it.
