FAMILIAR: An animal that is bonded to a person. They cannot die permanently and will only die when the person they're
connected to dies.

A familiar is an animal that has been magically bonded to an individual. Animals are not bonded to other animals, nor can
people be bonded with people, or people to an animal. This bond cannot be arbitrarily destroyed or broken. Even by null magic
fields (natural and unnatural). It is not beyond the realm of reason that a very powerful Mage, could disrupt the bond forcefully.

Familiarization is a service that's done by the middle class and is quite common in the upper class.

When an animal is made into a Familiar, there is usually a week to two weeks of adjustment for it and the person who it's been
bonded to. During this time, the Familiar will begin to understand everything that's said around them in the language that their
owner/partner speaks to them in. In turn, their counterpart will be able to understand everything their Familiar says, even if it's
nothing more than normal animal sounds.

During this time of adjustment, some animals are able to gain a real voice, and are able to talk to some extent though many
animals are not made for such a thing. It has been known that through bonding, some animals have gained the ability to speak
the language of their partner. It is a possible reaction that can happen between the two and there are on going studies to find out
the details of why this happens, and how to possibly replicate it in controlled conditions.

Typically without any extra costs involved, a species that can mimic words before it's become a Familiar will gain full abilities to
speak once it is Familiarized.

Another thing that can happen to a Familiar is having the ability to alter it's size. This is purely based upon what type of animal it
is and their original personality. Many Familiars are not taught to alter their size, usually due to the fact that many people do not
know that such a thing can be taught. Or it is just unnecessary. A perk to this is that if you have a large Familiar, the ability to take
it onto public transportation with you quite helpful. Or if it is something you could potentially ride, you can save fair that way.
Though riding a Familiar that can fly is prohibited unless you have proper gear for it.

There are many reasons for one to get a Familiar. The animals life will reflect the span for their counterpart. Any harm can befall a
Familiar and as long as it's counterpart is still alive, it will heal and return to life. When their counterpart dies, they die as well.

Animals are typically bonded to people when they're young. Giving the child a life long companion who they can always confide in
and have. This practice is common and fairly expected in certain circles.

A Familiar is more than just an animal that has a long life span. They are a friend, and someone who is viewed as completely
individual from their counterpart. People can only safely have one at a time, and it is highly unusual for someone to have more.
Due to the strain that it places upon the person, and due to the difficulty of finding someone who has the skills to bond and who is
not loyal to the ways of the Magic Guild and common laws.

Familiars can be removed from a person, but the whole process is fairly involved and very expensive. This procedure is one that
is only performed if something has happened and they MUST break the two apart. In a case like this, it would be to put an animal
down if they had become too dangerous. Animals have their own unique personalities, likes and dislikes and can be very
different from the one they are bonded with. Though it should be noted that if a Familiar is violent, or begins to display violent
tendencies that, that speaks volumes about the person that they are bonded with.

The other reason is that a person might have to be institutionalized, or has been harming their Familiar. These cases are rare
and the removal of a Familiar can be stressful on both the person and the animal. Though if the person is beyond help, then there
is little else that can be done. In these cases the Familiar can be 'shifted' over to another family member or to someone they
know who is willing to take them to try to prevent more stress on the animal. Or they can be taken to a shelter that will take care of
them until they reach the end of their life span, which has reverted back to their natural one. So at whatever stage of life the
animal reflects, it will live out until it dies naturally even if it's life span has been lengthened by being bonded to a person. An
animal will slowly loose the abilities it had gained while being a Familiar, but it would never go back to it's original state
completely.

Most Familiars can be 'called' by their counterparts from almost anywhere. There are a variety of things that can prevent such a
thing from working. Though even if a Familiar cannot hear it's counterparts 'call' they are still connected.
