Males vs Females:
Males are smaller and weaker than their female counter parts on
average.
Males can also use magic which is something very rare for female
Apolarins to do. Even if they do find that they can do magic, most
wouldn't admit up to it due to how males are viewed in their society.
Due to this, males will grow up to either be general laborers and or
mages.
Where they Live and how they Live:
The Southern Apolarins live in the icy city of Iysunia. It's their home city
and there aren't any other's like it within their territory.
Their homes are made of ice blocks, that will eventually be lined with fur.
They live out in the frozen tundra and not until recently haven't had
contact with the other species found in Sahnlinn.
Their Society:
Apolarins have a Matriarchal society. As such there are certain rules that
the males must abide by.
Speaking: They must only speak when spoken to. If there is an
emergency this is not applicable and if they wish to begin a conversation
with a female that is not their mate, they must gently touch a female's
forearm and then bow their head and wait to be addressed. If the female
continues to walk off and ignore the male. He has no right to persue,
doing so could end up with the smaller Apolarin getting beaten.
Show Casing: Some females are quite fond of their male counterparts
and will make them look nice and then 'show them off' to other females
who might not have as visually appealing males.
Jobs:
On average, the females will go out and hunt, while the males stay at
home to watch over the children, prepare the food, and make whatever
else is needed. Females also learn all these skills due to them having to
do a 'Right of Age' hunt when they are young. Forcing them to survive on
their own for two months without anything, but themselves.
Diet: Southern Apolarins tend to live off of fish and seals that are abundant in their
area of northern Sahnlinn. A King Seal is enough to feed four female Apolarins who
can eat sixty pounds of food in one sitting.
Due to the migration of their food, they can end up hunting Great Snow Deer and
Ice Elk.
Great Snow Deer and Ice Elk can be found almost full year round. Where as the
King Seals migrate farther up north and aren't in their area for four months a year.
The only food which IS year round are the Ice Fish; which consist of fifty different
types of Fish species, and the Jypsy Eels.
All of the food that Apolarin's consume is raw, due to them having no contact with
plants or even rocks of any kind in their area. All they have is ice, snow, and what
products they get from their kills.
Due to the cold that's constantly around, keeping a kill fresh and properly
'refrigerated' is an easy task.
Joining of the Sahnlinn Empire:
When they were originally approached to join the Empire by Empress Emerelda they
scoffed at the idea. Upon hearing the rules and laws that they'd have to abide by
and the, as they saw it 'Unfair Advantages' their Apolarin Males would get, the
Apolarin Queen rejected the entry.
It wasn't until it was mentioned that the Northern Apolarin Tribe was also now part of
the Empire, that the Southern Apolarins gave it a second thought and joined.
The Northern Apolarins are held in high regard and hearing that they had joined
with the 'flimsy people' was the exact push they needed.
Differences between Northern and Southern
Apolarins:
Southern Apolarins are shorter and are more leanly
built, where as the Northern Apolarins are heavier,
and their arms are longer with wider forearms, and
they have longer and pointer snouts.
The average Southern Apolarin can lift 600 pounds,
where as the average Northern Apolarin can lift
upwards of 1000.
Honour and Respect:
The Southern Apolarins respect the Northern Apolarins greatly. Even due to this though, they wouldn't change their ways to be more like the
Northern Apolarins since it's seen that the Southern Apolarins have a hundred times more people than the Northern Apolarins. So such
'loose' rules, though greatly respected, wouldn't work due to the sheer number they have.
It's only on the rarest of occasions that a Southern and a Northern Apolarin will meet. Both are well outside of their boundaries, and for a
long time, it wasn't believed that they actually existed. It wasn't until one of the past queens saw one for herself, that she was forced to
believe the tale of the 'Walking Mountains that wear the Fur of their kills more proudly than even the animal it came from'.
How they Live:
Unlike the Southern Apolarins, the Northern Apolarin's are
nomadic. They live in homes constructed from fur and bone
that's held together by strips of leather.
Their body is their weapon, and when they are taking down a
kill, they use no other weapons besides their, teeth, claws
and natural strength. Once the kill has been skinned,
anything which they don't eat, is then collected and when
ready will be used to draw in a Tundra Wolf, or Lion Seals.
After it's drawn in by the unused organs of their previous
kill/s they will then, as a group attack it, and, the cycle will
repeat itself.
By using every part of the animal is how they honor it.
Daily Life:
Their Male and Females, look fairly the same, and as such
are treated no differently from each other in their tribe.
Children are Children, and Adults are Adults. Children play
and learn to hunt, and Adults hunt and help watch over the
Tribe's children.
They have no 'This is a man's job' or 'this is a woman's job'.
Everything is open to everybody. It is this logic that makes
their one to one interactions so relaxed and unhindered. If
there is a time where they all want to spend a day playing like
the Children, then who's to say they shouldn't?
Their 'Designated Leader' isn't someone set. Usually what
happens is that someone either volunteers, or more
correctly, falls victim to being leader, by being chosen by the
previous leader. This will keep occurring until either someone
becomes to lazy to fight this position, or everybody finds that
they like to have someone as a leader.
The position of leader is the same as everybody else, except
that you get final say, and if your final say goes against
everybody else, you can either cave or fight for it.... Fighting
for it for the sake of fighting for it is what the leader usually
does on their lounging days to have fun.
So if this is the case... why IS there even a leader? Not that
they'd ever say it, and not for any reason's of decency or
kindness... the ONLY reason the Northern Apolarins go
through this procedure... is to make fun of the Southern
Apolarins...
Eyes/Nose:
Apolarin eyes are small and with the use of their nose, they can be avid hunters
despite their bulk which make many believe they are slow and lumbering.
Apolarin's aren't good with small details, but are good at seeing 'generals' and
at picking up movement.
Pups:
Pups are born in litters of one four. Though in the past eighty years the litters of three and four have
become rarer.
The newborns are very small and weak and have to have prolonged warmth until their thick fur begins to
grow in. This only takes a few days.
The pups start out by walking on all fours, and not having the hands and feet that they'll have once they're
older. By the time they're four, their limbs begin to grow out and by the time they're eight they will have a
more recognizable child's proportions along with hands and feet that are nearly done growing.
By the time they are ten years old, the Apolarin children have taken on their final structural changes and
will then continue to grow in height and weight until they are done at around twenty four years of age.
Hands and Feet:
The hands and feet have thick black pads that are made
up of fat and rough leather like skin.
These pads don't register heat or cold well, and can be
cut or injured with little effect to the Apolarin.
Their claws are short and strong and do not break
easily. Of all the various claws that appear on the
different species, the Apolarin's are the most sturdy.
Apolarins that have grown up in warmer climates, have
softer pads that can register pain and temperature more
easily. This has been related to the fact that the bare
skin isn't being exposed to as harsh of elements as
other Native Apolarins have on a daily basis.
